Deep within the enchanting rolling fields, lived a young shepherd. His life was mostly unadulterated, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind through the single tree on the mountaintop were his constant companions. Day upon day, guarding his charges inculcated in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. On one such day from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.
Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One day he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This prank laughed for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” check here But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is tough to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
